Welcome to the supernatural creature's haven, Kinau. Kinau is a fictitious town on the O'ahu island of Hawaii. Why supernaturals have congregated in the island city is still unknown, but the inhabitants, human and supernatural alike, are learning to adjust to their new reality.
This site aims for a supernatural spin on a slice-of-life city, complete with an academy and college to ensure everyone has a place here.

[break] a small yawn escaped his lips as he turned the page. he wouldn't be in here reading had it not been for someone's tutor session. ezra didn't sit with them. he sat a table away. he brought along his own homework. might as well get it done since he had to sit here and wait.
he should of brought his earbuds, that way he could listen to music and not the shuffling of feet, the turning of pages and the occasional cough. he was getting sleepy. didn't he just read this page? another yawn escaped his lips and he closed his book. his notebook was near by and he decided to write a note down. he tore the page from the notebook and crumpled it up.
he hoped his aim wasn't bad. as he gave the paper ball a tight squeeze and aimed it at hachi.

'The standard deviation is…?' His tutor quizzed. It felt like the millionth question- the teenage photographer was growing tired of the questions already. [break][break] “There’s a formula… don’t I need the p-value?” Hachi mumbled, grabbing his own notebook and flipping through it for his formula page. His tutor wrote the steps on the page they were working on, tapping the sheet. Hachi set his notebook back down, following the steps to solve the problem. [break][break] Or, at least, Hachiko’d tried to, until Ezra threw a paper ball at him. What was this, first grade? But he snatched the crumpled paper, glancing over at Ezra before unfolding it with a smile. Maybe it’d be an excuse to cut this tutoring session short! He was sure his tutor’s time was almost up, anyway, right…? It felt like they’d been sitting here a long time now, likely as bored as his friend felt.
[break] maybe he should take a nap. nothing about this place screamed comfort. well maybe those bag chairs. they seemed to swallow up who ever decided to take a seat. even then, it was way to open. who knows what people would do to an unsuspecting, unconscious person. after aiming the paper ball at hachi he watched for his reaction. he looked down trying to avoid laughing. a smile appearing on his face.
it would of been great if it had hit the tutor or hachi at least. he shook his head at the boy who had caught it. if he would of known he was likely to catch it, ezra would of written something on it. his session was going to be over soon. he gathered his things and walked over to their table.
"times up."he said mostly to the tutor. he watched as they gathered their things. ezra taking a seat in an empty spot."so what did you learn?"

There it was: Ezra, saving the day. Hachi’s eyes lit up as he looked up at Ezra: time was up. He was free for the day. When Ezra sat down, Hachi’s smile turned into a mischievous grin. [break][break] “That I’m still bad at math.” Hachi admitted. “But, that you’re a lifesaver, as always, Ezra. You never let me down.” He crumpled up the paper he was still holding it, throwing it back at Ezra, though he assumed it would quickly be deflected. He didn’t want to hold it, and it was Ezra’s paper. [break][break] “Apparently,” Hachi lowered his voice, leaning closer. “They expect us to find the standard deviation.” Hachi leaned back again once he’d spoken, chuckling- as if he were funny! He clearly thought he was. [break][break] “I know my dad knows all this stuff. Statistics. It’s supposed to be one of the business maths, right? But sometimes I wonder. I’m really not good with numbers.” Hachi admitted a bit self-consciously. He was good at photography and philosophy- he was convinced of it. [break][break] “How are your classes?” Hachi quizzed. He wasn’t sure when the last time he had asked Ezra that was, but he was feeling very inclined to stop talking about how bad he was at math as soon as possible.
[break] ezra tried to stifle a laugh."i doubt that's going to change over night. give it some time, and actually do your homework."ezra teased with a smile. he shook his head."it's just math. when it starts attacking you in real life, call me."he said as he watched hachi throw his paper ball back at him. it hit his shoulder and landed on the ground."you also suck at throwing paper balls."he teased as he leaned over and picked up the crumpled ball.
ezra nodded in."its when they start throwing letters at you. that's when you panic."he said as he aimed the paper ball for the recycle bin."i don't envy you. that's for sure."he said with a smile."you must be. i mean you count your pictures all the time."he said in a teasing tone.
now it was his turn to discuss his classes."im glad i finished all my math credits. so i can't complain about math. english is another story. we've had to write five page papers twice already."he said with a frown."at least my foreign language class will be useful in life."he shook his head and laughed.

There were far better things to do with his time than homework, but this was a rehashed argument that, at the moment, the eighteen-year-old wasn’t going to get drawn into. Ezra clearly knew where his priorities lied, and it definitely wasn’t with school. He only tried so he didn’t disappoint or shame his father. [break][break] “Lotta help you are,” Hachi retorted. Sports, also, wasn’t his forte. “Wind resistance- paper balls aren’t ideal for throwing.” Hachi added in explanation, though he was grinning. [break][break] Letters? Algebra. [break][break] “Sometimes the abstraction is a little easier. Kind of. I still don’t get the point. Why is a simplified fraction with variables more correct than its original version?” Hachi quizzed, as if Ezra were offering to explain. Of course his question missed the point. But beyond that, it proved that Hachi didn’t understand that math in high school taught students the concepts- it taught them how numbers and variables worked, and how the logic of mathematics functioned. It wasn’t about arriving at the final destination, as if this were the toughest math available- it clearly wasn’t, even if Hachi might treat it like it were. [break][break] “I have to. There’s a challenge right now,” Hachi pulled out his phone, swiping away the lock screen. “Where you have to take a unique self-portrait everyday for a month. I was going to start in February with a few photography classmates. If you want, we can take pictures of you, too, and you can participate.” Hachi glanced up from his phone to gauge Ezra’s reaction- truth be told, he liked taking pictures of his friend. Ezra had been Hachi’s longest, and most treasured photograph subject. Hachi might even say that, without Ezra, he wouldn’t be the photographer he was today, though his favorite images of his friend were always the candid ones. [break][break] When his friend told him about his English class, Hachi tried to resist chuckling himself. He didn’t like English any more than Eza, but the thought of poor Ezra struggling through ten pages of English… [break][break] “You know, if they’d just let us write in Japanese,” Hachi began the argument, but he didn’t finish: he’d held firmly to the idea that writing in Japanese was so much easier, in large part because he knew a lot more Japanese words than English words. He could articulate his ideas far better. But in English? He felt a bit like he was always speaking superficially: never able to just talk, always trying to figure out his words.
[break] ezra couldn't help but laugh. the tutor thing hadn't been his idea. if anything ezra would of helped hachi out with his homework. or at least given him the right answer. he loved to tease the kid so it would of been funny to see him come back with an even worse grade than before."you know what. i think you're over thinking things. you need to relax."if having fake id's wasn't enough the occasional party or two would suffice.
ezra simply shrugged his shoulders."i thought philosophy was your thing, not mine."he chuckled and brushed his hair out of his eyes."all our life they've told us do this. why? because they said so."
soon ezra brought up hachi's favorite subject. he swore the kid always had some sort of photography device on him."right. okay, and of course."he chuckled once more."you've taken so many photos of me. my portfolio is full."he would admit he was joking, but through the years hachi scored ezra a few modeling jobs. not that ezra wanted them, but hachi insisted.
"my modeling days are over."he shook his head."as long as its just you. i guess it will be alright."even if he were to say no hachi would find a way to snap a picture or two without him knowing. he knew that if hachi set his mind on something he was determined to see it through. how many times had the boy gotten hurt just because he wanted to get the perfect angle for a picture? too many to count.
he nodded. english wasn't his forte or at least when it came to writing. he always left out a word or two. it drove him crazy the amount of time he had to spend on it."if only."he said."are you ready to go? or were you planning on doing more studying?"

“Let’s go relax.” Hachi grinned at the idea. Whatever they ended up doing, it was bound to be fun, especially if Ezra was with him. He could definitely use a drink, or a crowd of strange Americans, to help him forget everything he’d just learned about statistics. In hindsight, that might be why none of this was sinking in- he actually actively tried to forget it. [break][break] “Of course it’s my thing.” Hachi gave a smug grin for a few seconds before it devolved into a sincerely playful grin. Philosophy seemed like such an abstract thing to like, and yet, there he was, quoting Derrida, and reading Freud. It was strange, but philosophy was universal no matter what language you spoke. [break][break] “Perfect! This is going to be so fun, you won’t regret it Ezra.” Hachi was excited now, as if the very mention of photography could pacify whatever woes had previously troubled him. That wasn’t far from the truth, actually. [break][break] “I’ve got a bunch of ideas already! We should take a few together. You know, two birds, one stone. I’m pretty sure that isn’t against the rules, but I’ll check.” Rules. Like there was some kind of order to this. Really, it was a self-portrait project set up by strangers to- as Ezra alluded to when he said his portfolio was full- build their portfolios and get them practicing. It was no secret that it was hard to make it as a photographer, but practice was the secret. Not that Hachi needed the coaching- Ezra was right, he always had his camera, or his cell phone that took awfully nice photos with its high-res camera, but wasn’t always the best in quality when it came to phone calls. [break][break] “Everyone loved you as a model, Ezra.” Hachi insisted. “Maybe someday you’ll change your mind. When you’re sick of spending all your time with me.” He teased. Did he sound convincing? Though he didn’t like being around Ezra all of the time, something about being so close to graduating high school had left him… well, scared. Scared that Ezra really would have a life that didn’t revolve around him someday. Their relationship, their psuedo-bodyguard thing, that was going to end someday, wasn’t it? It was easy to ignore before, but not now. [break][break] “Yeah- I’m ready.” Hachi nodded, getting out of his chair. He pushed it in idly, picking up his math book and papers only to shove them unceremoniously into the backpack that was sitting against the leg of the chair. Picking up the backpack, he slung it over his right shoulder. [break][break] “Did you have something in mind?” It had been Ezra who prompted it, Hachi thought it was only fair to at least ask the other male if he had a plan. If not, well, Hachi would gravitate back towards his version of “relaxing”, which wasn’t that different than Ezra’s, it seemed. That, or taking photos. Hachi’s camera was tucked away in his backpack, protected by a hard plastic case that- quite honestly- took up most of his backpack.
